Michael Kurzwelly is an artist based in the twin cities of Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice on the German-Polish border. Over twenty years ago, he conceived of Słubfurt, a city that enables the residents from both sides of the Oder River, as well as newcomers, to forge a new, shared identity.
Słubfurt is more than just the sum of two towns divided by a border; it is a new creation that redefines life in a border area, stimulating creativity and giving a voice to those who might otherwise go unheard in each city. In Carinarnica, he presented the history of Słubice and, through workshops, explored ways of thinking about the city of the future. During a two-week residency from May 23rd to June 5th, 2021, he also gave a special presentation for the students of the UNG Academy of Arts.
